The purpose of this project is to promote general education and awareness for Washoe County special needs populations, specifically the deaf and hard of hearing (DH/H). This is a region-wide project led by the Washoe County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security in cooperation with fire agencies including Sierra Fire Protection District, North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, Reno Fire Department, Red Rock Volunteer Fire Department, and the Gerlach Volunteer Fire Department.
The project consists of a two-prong outreach. The first effort is to reach out to school children and their families through the school district (and DH/H community events); the second is to incorporate the outreach into regional fire department door-to-door campaigns. Both outreach methods will emphasize smoke alarm installation and home safety inspections to this high risk population.

Specific actions in the project include using a project manager who is a deaf and hard of hearing advocate to design age-appropriate flyers and brochures for the DH/H school children (to include a Spanish language version). Produce radio and television PSA addressing the project (also with Spanish language version). Working closely with the 5 fire departments, school district, and private/charter schools to conduct outreach activities at each school. Attending DH/H community events to promote the project. Purchasing industry standard fire detection alarms with strobe light and vibration units to be installed at each identified residence. Integrating the materials and units into the 5 fire departments’ door-to-door campaigns to ensure that the program saturates the region and is positioned for sustainment.
