Tuba Christmas performances are held each year all over the world, but this is the only event in Nevada. The first Tuba Christmas was conducted in New York City's Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink on Sunday, December 22, 1974. The musical event was conceived as a tribute to premier tuba player and teacher William J. Bell, who was born on Christmas Day, 1902.

Located within Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, the Wilbur D. May Center is managed by the Washoe County Community Services Department and continues to receive generous support from the Wilbur May Foundation.
