Reno, Nev. (December 11, 2012) – The Board of Directors for the Western Nevada Development District (WNDD) announced today that it has voted unanimously to incorporate Washoe County, including the City of Reno and City of Sparks, into its nine county region. The inclusion of Washoe County, in addition to Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Humboldt, Lyon, Mineral, Pershing and Storey Counties, will create more opportunities for cooperation among counties, and greater access to resources such as federal grant monies to further economic development in western Nevada.

News of WNDD’s decision comes at a time when regional efforts are key to success and competitiveness in economic development on a national platform, and a high priority for Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval.

“On behalf of the WNDD Board of Directors, we welcome Washoe County, Reno, and Sparks becoming members of WNDD,” said Ron Radil, executive director of the WNDD. “Regional collaboration is necessary regarding economic development, as these issues do not recognize nor stop at county lines.”

The board for the voluntary association of local governments, comprised of elected officials and private sector appointees from participating counties, cited the increased opportunity to develop a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for the region. WNDD maintains the CEDS as a document local governments may use to secure funding from both public and private sources. WNDD is certified by the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA), as an Economic Development District. Nine counties will make the region more competitive in securing funds from EDA and other public and private agencies to implement economic development projects benefitting the region, its jurisdictions and the citizens in the region.

Additionally, as part of the ReCharge initiative the local governments and elected officials in the region made regional cooperation a priority.

“The City of Reno would like to thank the Board of Directors for welcoming the City of Reno, Washoe County, and the City of Sparks in to the WNDD,” said Reno Mayor Robert Cashell. “Continuing to join forces as a region will better our entire community, create jobs, and grow businesses. It’s a win for Northern Nevada and our great state.”

Mayor Geno Martini of Sparks added, "Sparks is proud to be part of a larger effort to improve our economic development efforts and strengthen relationships with all jurisdictions and stakeholders, to ensure our ultimate economic prosperity."

Washoe County Chairman, Bob Larkin says combined effort will help move Northern Nevada’s economy forward. “We are one economic region,” Larkin said. “We are looking forward to leveraging our efforts by working together across borders and across boundaries to create a successful environment for economic development.”
