Reno, Nevada. May 30, 2013. Washoe County Registrar Dan Burk recently received the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) Medallion Award for his innovative and exemplary work as chief elections officer of Washoe County.

Nevada Secretary of State and NASS 2012-2013 President Ross Miller presented the award to Burk in a ceremony May 23.

“It’s a great honor and a wonderful recognition of all our efforts here in the County and the Registrar of Voters Department over the last 15 years,” said Burk. “Our team has made Washoe County’s election administration a respected, trusted and first-rate program. The credit goes to everyone from the Commissioners, the County Administrative Officer, the many dedicated County employees who have volunteered to work at the polls and the wonderful staff, who through their hard work made this success possible. I’m deeply grateful to Secretary Miller and humbled by this recognition.”

Washoe County registered an all-time high of 241,400 voters prior to the General Election last year, exceeding the record of 231,400 for the General Election in 2008. The County also posted a high turnout of nearly 79 percent in the 2012 General Election.

The NASS Medallion Award allows individual Secretaries of State to recognize outstanding service and dedication and is the nation's oldest, nonpartisan professional organization for public officials. The NASS has key initiatives in the areas of elections and voting and serves as a medium for the exchange of information between states and fosters cooperation in the development of public policy.

Dan Burk began his tenure at Washoe County as the Assistant Registrar of Voters in September 1997. He took over as the Acting Registrar of Voters in December 1998 and was promoted to Registrar of Voters in September 1999.
