Free summer reading program keeps kids engaged and offers chance to earn books and prizes.

The Summer Reading Program runs from June 1-August 31 at Washoe County librariesReading programs bolster skills and are free, convenient and funWhile kids think they are having a great time, educators know that informal reading increases children’s reading skillsStudies abound that show the direct relationship between reading and academic gains.

The 2013 Summer Reading Program will feature the themes “Dig into Reading” for younger children, “Beneath the Surface” for teens, and “Groundbreaking Reads” for adults.

Kids will receive a reading record when they sign up at any public library. They may keep track of their reading and earn books and prizesParticipants will also be entered into a monthly drawing for some fantastic donated grand prizes for skiing, swimming, bowling, museums, theatres, movies, air races and more! There will also be lively, entertaining and educational programs for kids and families. All programs are free of charge.

“Library reading programs help keep kids engaged with learning and reading in the most fun ways which is especially important during the summer break,” says Beate Weinert, Washoe County Library Programs and Community Collaborations Coordinator. “We invite readers of all ages to join us at the library this summer.”
