Reno, Nevada. August 23, 2013. Washoe County’s Lazy 5 Regional Park in Spanish Springs presents the final free Wednesday evening concert Aug. 28 and will feature The Bystanders with former County Manager Katy Simon.

“We've been playing together in some form since about 1990,” said Simon, who retired from Washoe County at the end of June. “We grew out of a non-profit that several of us founded in Truckee in 1987 to provide performances that funded scholarships for students in performing arts and we’ve donated about $100,000 over the years.”

Simon said all the band members have “day jobs" that include a lawyer, an architect and a technology professional. The Bystanders have opened for stars like John Mayall, Leon Russell and Nicolette Larson.

The free concert begins at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28 at the Lazy 5 Regional Park at 7100 Pyramid Way. Patrons can enjoy a free hamburger or hot dog courtesy of the concert series’ sponsor, Summit Christian Church, and raffle prizes will be offered. For more information, call (775) 823-6500.

“The ninth season of the free concert series has been great,” said Washoe County Park Ranger Barbara Borges. “To date, this year’s record attendance was 982 with an average attendance of 600 per concert. We’ve had excellent entertainment by local bands and we really appreciate the support of the sponsors. A special thanks to all the volunteers from Summit Christian Church who give their time to serve a free meal each week, as well as the local Boy Scouts and Law Enforcement Explorers who have volunteered to make this a safe and clean concert series.”
