Reno, Nevada.  May 20, 2014. The Washoe County Board of Commissioners adopted the budget for the upcoming fiscal year Monday. The formal adoption comes after presentations to the Commissioners from all County departments during the month of April, allowing staff to give the Board an overview of the services and resources and a chance to look at plans for the upcoming year.

The total budget for Washoe County is $567 million with the General Fund budget at $307 million. This year’s budget will include a net increase of 14 authorized positions for fiscal year 2014/15.

County Manager John Slaughter said he began the process in January with a budget message of staying the course and holding the line on expenditures. “I would like to send a very big thank you to our budget and fiscal staff, department heads and directors for the hard work on preparing for this year’s budget cycle. We were definitely able to accomplish our goals with this budget.”

Highlights from the approved Washoe County budget include:

  • Public safety:  additional 8 Deputy Sheriff positions, a Deputy Medical Examiner and additional staffing for the Crime Lab
  • Courts and criminal prosecution: additional staff for public defense and the District Attorney’s Office
  • Building and safety:  a permits services coordinator and additional building inspection support staff
  • Health: additional staff for Emergency Medical System (EMS) oversight
  • Parks: additional staff for North Valleys Regional Park for recreation programs and maintenance

Washoe County Chairman David Humke said it was a model budget year for first-time County Manager John Slaughter. “The Board would like to compliment Washoe County staff and department heads for staying the course during these tough times and bringing us this budget. All of the Commissioners send a big thank you.”
